Military Father, Home From Afghanistan, Surprises His Two Young Sons

“My husband, SSG Chris Calhoun is in the infantry in the 1/25 Stryker Brigade that is currently in the very dangerous Panjwai Valley of Afghanistan. Chris was diagnosed with severe PTSD and returned home to be put into the Warrior In Transition Battalion. Our boys are Knox (2) and Kenai (1), Kenai was just 10 months old when Chris left and we were both a little concerned he would not remember his daddy. We used DVDs, pictures, and daddy dolls and were so happy he did not forget his daddy and quickly scooted into Daddy’s arms when he saw him. I love how Knox is so giggly when he sees him at the front door too. :)

Words couldn’t begin to describe how proud I am of my husband for stepping up and getting the help when he needed it and I am so happy he is home where he can start getting some help and healing. PTSD is such a stigma in the military and especially the infantry. I want to be an advocate and support for soldiers suffering from PTSD and let them know there is help and hope and there is no shame. And I know that someday when our sons are old enough to understand they will be so proud of their daddy.”
